Because one of the main requirements for this project is to have a functional data center while changes are performed, the data center has been divided in 4 zones (A, B, C, and D). Two zones will be addressed in separate phases at a time; Phase I will cover zones A and B, and then the same process will be repeated in Phase II for zones C and D (see picture below).
The strategy to achieve the energy efficiency optimization is the following:
- Establish a baseline for current energy usage
- Replace all light bulbs in the facility with energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.
- Place all lighting systems on a timer and motion detection control system
- Optimize HVAC system by building out 4 independent climate zones
- Place all HVAC systems on a timer and temperature control system
- Develop reporting software to provide analysis for energy usage for each system.
